One Great Tale
“The best things in life are the people we love, the places we’ve been and the memories we’ve made along the way.”
I have always wanted to visit Dumaguete City. And it was only this year that I was able to set foot on the City of Gentle People. Ah! That feeling you get when you’re finally able to tick-off one on your travel bucketlist! *grinning ear to ear*. Anyway, in the days to come, you will read more about the places I’ve visited in Dumaguete. For now, allow me to say thank you to the people who made my trip more memorable.
Not a day goes by that I don’t think of you guys. I really, really miss you and all my adventures in Dumaguete. I am glad I made this trip and met all of you. I am very grateful for all the kindness that you’ve shown me during my stay.
Thank you father Willy and mother Teody for welcoming me into your home. For the duration of my stay, I never felt left out or unwanted. I never felt like a guest because I was treated more than that: I was treated like I was your own daughter, a family.
Aside from the sweet treatment and the yummy foods that you served to me, (I miss mangga, humba, budbod, sikwate, and your ginisang munggo, by the way.) I also want to thank you for raising Katie as she is. She’s amazing! She’s smart and funny. I love her personality! If you ever doubt yourself as parents, DON’T! You have raised a fine, young woman with a strong faith in God. She’s just wonderful and very open-minded. Your daughter has been there for me through the good and the bad. She wouldn’t be who she is now, if not because of you two. So again, thank you so much for raising a wonderful person.
To Sister, thank you for sharing almost everything with me: from your clothes, kikay stuffs, to bedroom space. I’m glad to have met your friends, Patricia and Rhea, too. Hopefully, the next time I visit Duma, we can all hang-out somewhere and get to know each other more. And sister, before I forget, please don’t even try to mix Cream Silk Conditioner and saltwater again. We already know its effects on you, and we would like to avoid that. Hahahahah. I miss you sister!
To all Titos, Titas, Lola, Lolo, Cousins, Nieces, and Nephews, thank you all for being so sweet and kind to me. It’s a pleasure meeting all of you.
And last but not the least, thank you soooooo, sooooo much Katie!! Meem, I know words will not be enough, but still, I want to thank you for being my tour guide, and for organizing this fun trip. Thank you for being such a good friend. You are always around when I need you, always willing to listen when I need to talk, always supportive with my “pictorial” sessions, and “igatan”. Through messed up dates and career changes, you were always around to lend a hand and tell a joke. I appreciated every little thing that you do for me. You are one of the most important people in my life. Thank you again for being such a great person and a wonderful friend.
Yes Meem. YOU ARE A WONDERFUL FRIEND. I know you are in a situation right now where it is hard to believe that you are a wonderful friend, but listen to this; you should never let what happened mess up your mind. Never allow her words, not even for a second, to question what kind of a friend or what kind of a person you are. People will pick out your flaws because they have their own. Like what Thích Nhất Hạnh, a Vietnamese Buddhist monk, once said, “When another person makes you suffer, it is because he suffers deeply within himself, and his suffering is spilling over…” So take deep breaths, release the negative vibe, see it as a positive criticism, and don’t let her words and the situation burden you. Treat her nicely still, the way you would shower a stranger with your kindness. Forgive her, BUT never forget this. For in this chapter of your friendship, you have learned life lessons. You have learned that knowing someone for so long does not guarantee that they are going to stick up with you or that they are not going to hurt you. You have learned that true friends are the ones who see you for who you are and no matter what imperfections you have or questionable life decisions you make, they will always find a way to be at your side. You have learned that no matter what pain you’re going through, tears will dry, hearts will heal, and there are still people who truly care for you. Thus, forgive but never forget.
I love you mang! And I can’t wait to see you again, and have all night long chika and laugh trips. Again, thank you so much meem. Thank you for this trip. For the friendship. For being you. For everything.
Father and Mother, I am now your self-declared adopted daughter and you can’t say NO. hahaha. I love ya!
