Let’s Go La Carlota: Our Lady of Peace Church
Standing proudly in the heart of the city is the century-old La Carlota Church or the Our Lady of Peace and Good Voyage. It is one of the oldest structures of the town and one of the very few churches of Romanesque architectural design in the region.
Originally, it was just a small chapel made of bamboo and cogon. In 1876, it became a parish. Silay red bricks and coral stones that came from Guimaras Island were used as materials. They were binded by duck eggs and lime. The laborers who built the church were mostly Filipino males from age 16 to 60 years old working under the polo system. The church was finished in 1877.
